Teaching Tips | Week 5: Half Way through the Term: How's it going?
Summer 2009

With the mid-term grading period just behind us, you and your students should have a good sense of how it's going. This is a good time to reflect and make any needed adjustments:

Do your students need more practice with certain key skills?

  • Dedicate a portion of each class to reviewing skills and giving students practice exercises, until they've made sufficient progress.

  • Pair or group stronger students with weaker ones, so they can teach/help one another.

Are there important concepts/information students are having trouble grasping?

  • Assign students to plan and lead a review in groups for their classmates, based on what you've taught and/or outside research.

  • Correct any misperceptions.

Are students having trouble with attendance or latenesss?

Are individual students in need of help with time management, study skills, online learning strategies, writing, etc?

Are any students in danger of not passing?

  • Help At-Risk or Failing Students

Effective teaching involves both encouraging student successes, and responding to learning challenges and student needs. These resources should help you be responsive at this key point in the semester.
