Three examples of abbreviated rubrics or grading sheets. The sample criteria are taken from a FND Perspective class and would obviously need to be altered according to the assignment and course.

Example #1: Teachers just make a checkmark on each continuum. The main distinction here is acceptable or “yes” and not acceptable or “no”.

CRITERIA YES NO
The placement of the light source results in interesting design and shadow shapes
There is a clear focal point and composition is unified by the value pattern
Media application is smooth and controlled with consistent transitions between values. Hard and soft edges are clear and don’t bleed
Overall grade:

Comments:

Example #2: The description for an unacceptable mark in any category has been added here.

ACCEPTABLE NOT ACCEPTABLE
The placement of the light source results in interesting design and shadow shapes    Placement of the light source appears random, resulting in uninteresting design and shadow shapes.
There is a clear focal point and composition is unified by the value pattern    Composition lacks a clear focal point and unity.
Media application is smooth and controlled with consistent transitions between values. Hard and soft edges are clear and don’t bleed    Application of media does not appear controlled. Transitions may be inconsistent and edges may bleed.
Overall grade:

Example #3: Instead of a continuum, teachers can check off particular grades for each criteria in this example. Teachers may wish to assign points to each criteria and calculate the final grade based on points earned in each category.

  PASSING NOT PASSING
  A(4pt) B(3pts) C(2pts) D(1pt) F(0pts)
