Guidelines for Making Activities Work

1. Give clear directions

  • Write out what you want students to do
  • Write out the process required to do the task
  • Model the task

2. State reasonable time limits

  • How long should it take them to do the task?
  • Write time limit on the board

3. Hold them accountable

  • Have students repeat the directions to you to confirm their understanding of what they need to do.
  • Tell them they need to be ready to report back to the whole class
  • Assign roles to group participants. Should there be a Reader? Note-taker? Facilitator? Speaker? Time-keeper?

4. Facilitate the group-work process

  • Circulate around the classroom and check in with all groups / partners.

5. Discuss as a whole class

  • Call on different groups to get a variety of responses
  • Capture key points on blackboard
