Guidelines for Making Activities Work
1. Give clear directions
- Write out what you want students to do
- Write out the process required to do the task
- Model the task
2. State reasonable time limits
- How long should it take them to do the task?
- Write time limit on the board
3. Hold them accountable
- Have students repeat the directions to you to confirm their understanding of what they need to do.
- Tell them they need to be ready to report back to the whole class
- Assign roles to group participants. Should there be a Reader? Note-taker? Facilitator? Speaker? Time-keeper?
4. Facilitate the group-work process
- Circulate around the classroom and check in with all groups / partners.
5. Discuss as a whole class
- Call on different groups to get a variety of responses
- Capture key points on blackboard
